CSX Transportation GP15s.
ONE OF THE many things I love about US railroading is the ability to get close to the trains, which makes for a visceral experience. Even smaller locomotives, like this ex-Conrail GP15-1, make for a big impression! Now wearing CSX Transportation’s YN2 scheme, CSXT 1556 picks its way past the numerous parked cars with a local made up entirely of tank cars at Burnham, Illinois, on May 22nd, 2006 (Some were parked so close, before the train came I thought the line was abandoned!). The loco was top ‘n’ tail with ex-Chessie System GP15T sister CSXT 1512.
The GP15 family is a particular favourite of the photographer, especially the former Chessie System GP15T locomotives, which look like baby ‘Tunnel Motors’. They looked fab when first delivered wearing yellow, blue and vermillion, and didn’t look half bad when repainted into CSX Transportation’s intermediate grey, blue and yellow scheme pictured here. It all went downhill after this as YN2 took over! This is CSXT 1514 (ex C&O 1514) at the Belt Railway of Chicago’s Clearing Yard, Illinois, on May 2nd, 2002.
