BRIDGES BUILT ON a massive scale are another highly photographic feature of North American railroading. This image isn’t 100% satisfactory because if you look closely these are just light engines, but you can see the effect I was going for! Kansas City Southern SD60 No. KCS 737, GP40-2L(W) No. KCS 4709 and GP40-2P No. KCS 4795 cross the meandering Red River at Shreveport, Louisiana, on October 17th, 2005.

You’ve never far from a former Missouri Pacific SD40 in the USA it would seem. This is another ex-Mopac example, now rebuilt to SD38-3 standards for hump and trimming work at the Belt Railway of Chicago’s Clearing Yard in Bedford Park/Clearing, Illinois. The BRC 565 (ex-MP 775) is pictured ‘on shed’ at Clearing Shops on May 2nd, 2002.

Who can resist this ex-Trona Railway SD40-2, with its bright red pilots, fuel tank, jacking pads and air tanks! Now a ‘gun-for-hire’ leaser for Helm, as the HLCX 6242, it started out life in 1974 as a 20-cylinder SD45-2 working out west for the Santa Fe. It was photographed heading a long line of Union Pacific SDs at CSXT’s Selkirk Yard, New York, on March 7th, 2005. Trona Railway is a Mojave Desert-based mineral hauling short line owned by IMC Global.
