Happy days when EE Type 1s ruled on East Anglian RHTTs.
ON A GORGEOUS October 7th, 2006, Direct Rail Services’ Class 20/3 No. 20309 top ‘n’ tails the 1Z61 08.45 Stowmarket to Norwich Trowse Yard railhead treatment train past the steam era infrastructure at Thetford, Norfolk. Much of the Breckland line still keeps its oldie world charm even into 2008, with telegraph poles lining the tracks, manual signalling and even the odd loading gauge!
Replaced on East Anglian railhead treatment train duties for the 2008 season by Direct Rail Services Class 37s and 57/0s, the RFS Doncaster-rebuilt Class 20/3s are much missed in this part of the world. On November 22nd, 2006, the English Electric Type 1 pairing of Nos. 20313 and 20307 are pictured whistling through the Breckland scrubland at Hall Road level crossing, near Harling, Norfolk, with the 1Z63 13.10 Wymondham to Colchester service.

What do these ‘railhead treatment trains’ do? Why do they have a locomotive at each end?
