Alton & Southern MP15DC and a CP (ex-SOO) GP39-2.
IN A SWITCHER fleet dominated by EMD SW1500s, the East St Louis terminal railroad Alton & Southern (wholly owned by the Union Pacific) rosters just one MP15DC, the ALS 1522, built in November 1980. Pictured here at the massive Gateway Yard in the run down western side of the Illinois city, the locomotive prepares to leave the servicing area and get on with some work. The date was September 21st, 2002.
The perfect complement to the picture of SOO 4598 posted previously (see here), Canadian Pacific GP39-2 No. CP 4599 wears its new owner’s ‘beaver’ scheme rather than a SOO paint job. It also shows off a tell tale spotting feature of its Kennecot Copper past in that high clearance fuel tank, designed to keep it clear of rocks. The modern day ‘Dolly Sister’ is pictured with its long term colleage (the only other GP39-2 on the CP roster) at St Paul Shops, Minnesota, on October 5th, 2002.
