A pair of Minnesota Commercial Alco/MLW ‘RS’ locos.
THE TWIN CITIES terminal railroad Minnesota Commercial has a fascinatingly eclectic roster of power, which was primarily Alco/MLW-based right into the 2000s, although that seems to have suffered in recent years as EMDs and even GEs have been added in ever greater quantities to the fleet. RS18u No. MNNR 83, which is pictured here at the Commercial’s Midway shops in St Paul on October 5th, 2002, has the distinction of also being the last of its type to be operated by Canadian Pacific, before it was retired in 1998.
Reduced to B-unit status (hence the painted out/plated cab windows), former Lake Superior & Ishpeming RS3 was relatively new to the Minnesota Commercial roster when it had its photograph taken at the MNNR’s Midway Shops, St Paul, Minnesota on October 5th, 2002. Renumbered from the LSI 1604 to MNNR 1B it served on the terminal railroad until 2006 when it was carted off to NRE at Silvis, Illinois.
