IT’S DIFFICULT TO take the paint job of Gateway Western SW1200 No. GWWR 1204 very seriously with the large Brush Script style typeface in use for the company name and numbering. The Kansas City Southern subsidiary was officially merged into its owner in 2007, but on September 22nd, 2002, the switcher - pictured at Knoche Yard, Kansas City, Missouri, was still nominally part of an independent fleet.

Des Moines, Iowa, famous as the birthplace of Bill Bryson, its claim to be the insurance capital of America, its position as the first state to hold Presidential caucuses, and, er… that’s about the lot! It’s not a bad town for railfanning though, with UP, NS and IAIS active in the city. This is an example of the latter, as Iowa Interstate GP38AC No. IAIS 626, running long hood forward with a cut of grain cars, straddles East 18th Street grade crossing on May 18th, 2006.
