A pair of DRS Class 20/3s.
STILL GOING STRONG after 38 years of service (41 now in 2008), all the underframe detail of Direct Rail Services Class 20/3 No. 20313 is picked out by the late evening light as it sits at in the low level sidings at Norwich, Norfolk, on September 25th, 2005. This locomotive was one of the second batch of English Electric Type 1s to be rebuilt for DRS (at RFS Doncaster), previously being numbered 20194 (built by EE at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, in 1967 as D8194).
Built by English Electric as D8042 (20042) at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, in November 1959, The 1,000hp Type 1 was still going strong nearly five decades later as part of the Direct Rail Services’ fleet. Reengineered by RFS Doncaster in 1998 as a Class 20/3 No. 20312, it was stabled in the Royal Dock, Norwich, Norfolk, on June 26th, 2005, at the top of a weedkiller service (note the spraying coach behind the loco).
