General Electrics in intermodal operation.
A TYPICAL BIRMINGHAM, Alabama, scene recorded on May 12th, 2006, as a pair of GE Dash 9s lead an eastbound intermodal through the city at 24th Street Interlocking. Running ‘elephant’ style, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Dash 9-44CW No. BNSF 5164 is partnered with Norfolk Southern Dash 9-40CW on its train of domestic 53ft high-cube containers. Note the blast furnaces of one of the many steel mills hidden in the background.
CSX Transportation CW44AC No. CSXT 5101 shows off its YN3 ‘dark future’ paint at Pinoca Yard, Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 13th, 2006. While most railroads use their AC4400CW machines - to use General Electric’s official designation - in heavy haul operations such as unit coal trains, CSXT employs its fleet of over 600 machines in general service.
