We think of Japan of being multiple unit mad, but there are still locos around.
JAPAN FREIGHT RAILWAY Co. (JRF) DD51 B-2-B diesel-hydraulic No. 1184 pulls away from Tsuchizaki, Akita Prefecture, with an Akita-ko docks-Tsuchizaki yard transfer freight of containers on July 23rd, 2009. These awesome machines can still be found all over Japan.
This comparison of electric locomotive cabs sees classic red-liveried JR East EF81 1,500V dc/20kV ac electric No. 58 up against ‘tetra-pak’ blue/grey JR Freight EF64-1000 1,500V dc electric No. 1043. The pair were stabled at the popular railfanning location of Tabata Yard, Kita Ward, Tokyo on July 19th, 2009. The EF81s are mainly employed on sleeper trains, but are due to be replaced later this year.
