MAYBE ONE OF the most recognisable of Japanese multiple units types, by virtue of its distinctive cab design, JR West/West Japan Railways 183 Series four-car No. 183-206, 183-806, 182-702 & 183-2701 is one of a family of EMUs still in use all over Japan. The set is forming empty stock for the ‘Monju’ (文殊) limited express from Osaka to Fukuchiyama, photographed at Higashi-Yodogawa, Osaka-fu, on July 29th, 2009.

Another classic JR EMU design. JR West/West Japan Railways 103-0 Series four-car EMU No. 103-207 hums into Mukainada, Hiroshima prefecture, on July 27th, 2009, with a Hiroshima-Seno local service. These 1,500V dc units are being rapidly withdrawn, leaving just a few pockets of active sets in Japan.
