POSSIBLY THE MOST colourful locomotive I’ve ever come across, Florida Tri-Rail GP49PH-3 No. TRCX 812 has swapped its somber Norfolk Southern black for a new life as commuter rail traction. Fitted with a new Detroit Diesel head-end power unit, the former GP49 class unit SOU 4600 is pictured here at Knoche Yard, Missouri, on May 25th, 2006, fresh out of the the Mid-West Locomotive facility in Kansas City.

VIRGIN WAS ONE of the big winners in early privatisation, picking up two major InterCity franchises, West Coast and Cross Country. In the end, they never quite managed to passenger revolution that they promised, but they did have a nice livery. Wearing the familiar red and dark grey, No. 43098 Railway Children is seen on the rear of a XC service at Reading General on March 7th, 2002.

The Class 170/2 was getting ready to work a service to Cambridge.

THERE IS A pleasing symetrical quality about the number of Deutsche Bahn 101 Class No. 101 101-4, if you exclude that pesky check digit. Pictured at Hamburg-Harburg Hbf, Germany, on April 24th, 2008, the promotional liveried electric (A Roco sponsored “train to train connecting Europe” scheme bearing the message Welcome in many different of languages) prepares to depart with a southbound IC service.

STILL GOING STRONG after 38 years of service (41 now in 2008), all the underframe detail of Direct Rail Services Class 20/3 No. 20313 is picked out by the late evening light as it sits at in the low level sidings at Norwich, Norfolk, on September 25th, 2005. This locomotive was one of the second batch of English Electric Type 1s to be rebuilt for DRS (at RFS Doncaster), previously being numbered 20194 (built by EE at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, in 1967 as D8194).
