This is the second use of the K-code. Previous to 1989, PO special vehicles would have been given a TOPS code starting with P, which at that time stood for all 2-axle and Bogie PO wagons. The K code meanwhile was previously used for 2-axle Steel Coil wagons. The few vehicles left in this category were folded into the S coded fleet.
